How can Therapy Help me

A number of benefits are available from participating in therapy. Therapists can provide support, problem-solving skills, and enhanced coping strategies for issues such as depression, anxiety, relationship troubles, unresolved childhood issues, grief, stress management, body image issues and creative blocks. Many people also find that counselors can be a tremendous asset to managing personal growth, interpersonal relationships, family concerns, marriage issues, and the hassles of daily life. Therapists can provide a fresh perspective on a difficult problem or point you in the direction of a solution. The benefits you obtain from therapy depend on how well you use the process and put into practice what you learn. Some of the benefits available from therapy include:

Developing skills for improving your relationships
Finding resolution to the issues or concerns that led you to seek therapy
Learning new ways to cope with stress and anxiety
Managing anger, grief, depression, and other emotional pressures
Improving communications and listening skills
Changing old behavior patterns and developing new ones
Discovering new ways to solve problems in your family or marriage
Improving your self-esteem and boosting self-confidence

About twenty years ago I had my first experience working in the helping field when I became a crisis line counselor at a local rape crisis center. It was during my time there that my passion was ignited and I knew that I had found the work that I was destined to do. Over the course of my career I’ve worked in shelters and safe bed facilities, supporting clients who were fleeing domestic violence, dealing with homelessness, immigration issues, mental health, trauma and addiction issues. I fought passionately with and for these client’s to help them navigate a very broken system. Recently, after attending many different training courses and creating and running groups in both Dialectical and Cognitive Behavioral therapies I decided that it was time to get out of the crisis setting and start working with people on a longer term basis in order to help support them to move further along in their journeys to recovery. It was at this point that Empower Counselling Services was created. The combination of life experience, education and the knowledge gained from working with each and every one of my clients over the course of my career has allowed me to become a compassionate, open minded, flexible and creative therapist who is willing to take on any challenge in order to support a client.
